UMN DSI’s 2024 Spring Workshop: A Resounding Success

The DSI is thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of our 2024 Spring Workshop! The event, held from May 22-24, brought together a vibrant community of scholars, practitioners, and students to explore the latest developments in generative AI, fostering meaningful discussions and collaborations.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to the event’s success. Your engagement and insights were invaluable, and we hope the workshop offered a platform for learning, networking, and inspiration. We’re excited to share that this workshop will now be an annual event, with each year focusing on different, cutting-edge topics in data science. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and welcoming you to future DSI events.

Highlights from the Event

Day 1: GenAI Foundations and UMN Capabilities (May 22)

The workshop kicked off with a warm welcome from Dr. Shashank Priya, followed by an insightful keynote by Dr. Xiao-Li Meng, who discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by generative AI. Dr. Jisu Huh explored AI's impact on advertising, while Dr. Steven Wu presented an innovative approach to reinforcement learning. The afternoon featured presentations from Dr. Jie Ding on scalable AI, Dr. Jonathan Bentz on the evolution of computing, and Dr. Ben Lynch on AI support at the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute. The day ended with Data Set Lightning Talks and a networking reception.

Day 2: GenAI and Public Policy and Societal Impacts (May 23)

Nancy Sims opened the day with a discussion on AI and public policy, followed by Dr. Baobao Zhang’s presentation on AI governance. Michael Corey shared insights on community co-creation in the Mapping Prejudice project, while David Maeda and Secretary Steve Simon discussed AI's impact on elections. The afternoon sessions included Eran Kahana on AI data quality and Dr. Claire Segijn on ethical issues in AI surveillance.

Day 3: GenAI and Health Data (May 24)

The final day began with a keynote from Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado on the application of AI in medicine, followed by presentations from Dr. Dave Little, Dr. Louis Kazaglis, and Dr. Andrea Noel from EPIC on AI’s role in electronic health records. Dr. Shauna Overgaard discussed closing the AI translation gap in medicine, Mark Gardner covered FDA regulations, and Dr. Serguei Pakhomov, Dr. Hari Trivedi, and Dr. Scott Friedman presented on various health data topics. The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Galin Jones.
