Minnesota Delegation Forges Path for AI Leadership at NVIDIA Headquarters
February 2026 – A distinguished delegation from Minnesota, including representatives from the Data Science and AI Hub, the University of Minnesota, state government, and leading private sector businesses, recently concluded a pivotal one-day visit to NVIDIA’s headquarters in San Jose, California. The engagement focused on laying the groundwork for a robust and future-proof Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem within Minnesota, a strategic initiative dubbed the AI MINDSET (Artificial Intelligence in Minnesota’s Data Science and Emerging Technologies).
Discussions throughout the day centered on critical areas designed to accelerate Minnesota’s standing as a global hub for AI and data-oriented research. These included integrating AI into K–12 and higher education, upskilling the workforce, and exploring opportunities for state-level collaboration, with specific applications in national defense and medicine.
"The collaborative spirit and strategic alignment achieved during this delegation visit are monumental for Minnesota’s innovation future," stated a spokesperson for the Data Science and AI Hub. "The insights gained will directly inform our efforts to secure the state's position at the forefront of AI development and talent cultivation."
The primary goal for the private sector delegates was to accelerate the formation of a vibrant AI ecosystem that attracts and retains companies, from global enterprises to small, innovative startups. Understanding NVIDIA’s technology roadmap is crucial for businesses to make large capital expenditures in R&D, infrastructure, and hiring, ensuring Minnesota’s corporate strategies across MedTech, manufacturing, and finance remain aligned with global standards..
The University of Minnesota’s participation was critical for shaping the academic and research infrastructure necessary to train the next generation of leaders. Discussions with NVIDIA’s education and research teams will inform curriculum both at undergraduate and graduate levels, identifying critical, in-demand skills such as AI literacy and ethical AI frameworks.
Furthermore, UMN leadership gained expert advice on building and funding next-generation research computing facilities, ensuring future capital investments are future-proofed. The state government's interest in promoting AI-literacy in K-12 was also discussed, creating a direct feedback loop for UMN by ensuring better-prepared incoming university students. High-level partnership opportunities for large-scale, funded joint research projects were also a highlight, poised to advance UMN's research agenda significantly.
Next Steps: A follow-up meeting will be held this spring to further the AI roadmap in the state of Minnesota. The Data Science and AI Hub is excited to lead Minnesota’s AI ecosystem to further drive innovation and discovery across the state.
