AI Explorers Summer Camp Wraps Up Two Weeks of Innovation, Fun, and Surprise Visitors

The Run the World: AI Explorers Summer Camp just wrapped up two unforgettable weeks filled with curiosity, creativity, and cutting-edge technology. Hosted by the Data Science and AI Hub at the University of Minnesota, this immersive experience brought high school students to campus to dive into the world of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science.

Campers spent two action-packed weeks exploring how AI is shaping the future—while also having a whole lot of fun. A surprise visit from Goldy Gopher, the University’s beloved mascot, brought big smiles, and a demonstration from a robotic dog sparked awe and excitement as students imagined how AI connects with robotics in the real world.

Originally launched in 2018 as the <RUN>: \ THE\ WORLD Machine Learning Summer Day Camp, this program was created in partnership with the School of Statistics, School of Mathematics, and what is now the Data Science and AI Hub. The camp continues its tradition of offering project-based, hands-on learning to students of all experience levels.

In just two weeks, students:

  • Learned to code in Python—no prior experience required

  • Applied AI algorithms to real-world datasets from medicine, history, gaming, and more

  • Chose their own projects—from mushroom classification to predicting Titanic survival probabilities

  • Presented their findings to peers, mentors, and instructors

Whether they were analyzing trends, making predictions, or telling data-driven stories, campers walked away with tangible skills, a stronger understanding of AI, and the confidence to continue exploring data science.
